Ross River Virus infection
- caused by RNA virus transmitted in the bite of a Culicine mosquito
- Ross River virus causes joint pain, swelling and stiffness in up to 90% cases, rash in circa 50%
- joint pain, debilitating lethargy and myalgia persist > 1yr in up to 25% cases
- diagnosis confirmed by PCR assay early in illness or detection of IgM antibodies
- no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine
