Ross River Virus infection

  • caused by RNA virus transmitted in the bite of a Culicine mosquito
  • Ross River virus causes joint pain, swelling and stiffness in up to 90% cases, rash in circa 50%
  • joint pain, debilitating lethargy and myalgia persist > 1yr in up to 25% cases
  • diagnosis confirmed by PCR assay early in illness or detection of IgM antibodies
  • no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine
